丹麦王子哈姆雷特从国外求学返乡后，发现他的父亲老哈姆雷特已经逝世，而母亲却改嫁给了他的叔叔克劳狄斯。父亲的灵魂在哈姆雷特的面前显灵，告诉他是克劳狄斯下毒杀害了自己。在震惊和愤怒之下，哈姆雷特变得发狂，竭力思索为父亲复仇的方法。哈姆雷特的心上人奥菲莉亚离开了她的哥哥雷欧提斯（即将出国学习）。雷欧提斯和父亲波洛尼厄斯建议她与哈姆雷特断绝往来，奥菲莉亚为此十分伤心。在一些演员抵达之后，哈姆雷特询问他们是否能在克劳狄斯国王和乔特鲁德王后的面前上演一幕“国王惨遭杀害，皇后改嫁凶手”的戏码。哈姆雷特在母亲的房间与其对质，窗帘后面传来沙沙声，哈姆雷特以为是克劳狄斯，便向窗帘处刺去，却误杀了在后偷听的波洛尼厄斯。奥菲莉亚得知爱人意外地杀死了自己的父亲，精神崩溃，以致投水自尽。雷欧提斯回乡后发誓要为父亲报仇，克劳狄斯则怂恿他用一把淬过毒的剑与哈姆雷特决斗。同时，克劳狄斯也为哈姆雷特准备了一杯毒酒，但却被乔特鲁德王后误饮。随后，哈姆雷特也强迫克劳狄斯喝下了毒酒。面对复仇后的狼藉景象，身负致命伤的哈姆雷特茫然不已。

Hamlet Synopsis
Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, returns home from school abroad to find that his father, Old Hamlet, has died and that his mother Gertrude has remarried his uncle Claudius. The Ghost of his father appears to Hamlet, and tells him that Claudius poisoned him. Shocked and furious, Hamlet pretends to be mad as he ponders how he will avenge his father’s murder. Hamlet’s sweetheart, Ophelia, parts with her brother Laertes (who is also heading off to school abroad) and is saddened at both her brother’s and her father Polonius’ advice to break things off with Hamlet. Some actors arrive, and Hamlet asks them if they can present a play to Gertrude and Claudius of a King’s murder and a Queen’s remarriage to the murderer. Hamlet confronts his mother in her bedroom: hearing a rustle behind the curtains he mistakenly stabs and kills Polonius who has been eavesdropping. Ophelia goes mad upon finding that her lover has accidentally murdered her father, and drowns herself. Laertes returns and swears revenge upon Hamlet, and Claudius convinces him to fence with Hamlet with a poisoned rapier. Claudius also prepares a poisoned drink for Hamlet, but Gertrude drinks it first, and then Hamlet forces Claudius to drink it. Mortally wounded, Hamlet wonders at the wreckage of revenge.
