《四川好人》讲述了一个可笑的故事：三位神仙下凡来到人间寻访好人，但无论是富人还是穷人都不愿给他们提供栖身之地。只有好心的妓女沈黛收留了他们。第二天，三人显现了自己是神仙的身份，他们奖励了沈黛，帮助她开了一个烟草店。然而，沈黛的乐善好施很快导致了经营的困难。无助的她只得戴上面具，化装成“表哥”隋达来剥削工人，又把得到的钱接济穷人。隋达代表剥削，沈黛象征善良，然而人们眼中水火不容的“恶”与“善”竟然相得益彰融于一个人的身上，人们咒骂夺走他们财产的隋达，却又用着相同的伎俩迫害吃不饱饭的沈黛，但这些可怜又可悲的大众呢？他们吃不饱，又要求他们讲怎么样的道德。

The Good Person of Szechwan Synopsis

The play tells us a funny story:three Gods come down to the earth in search for a good person who is willing to give them a shelter for onenight.However,they end up in finding only greed, evil, dishonestyand selfishness——no one wants to give them a favor,no matter rich or poor, except for the young prostitute named ShenTeh.The next day,the gods reveal their identities and reward ShenTeh for her hospitality, as theytake it as a sure sign of goodness. They assist her in setting up a humble tobacco shop, but soon her business runs into trouble because ofher generosity.Helpless ShenTehhas to disguise herself as the invented cousin Shui Ta as the overseer and protector of her interests.Shui Ta, the embodiment of the evil,who is unemotional and pragmatic, even vicious, exploits the poor whileShenTeh, who is tender, compassionate and kindhearted, helps them.They are the same person.Those, scoldingShui Ta for depriving them of property, take advantage of ShenTeh with the same means. What are these pathetic people supposed to do? They are down and out, in no mood of being moral.
